George Pounovich, Sr. and his wife Martha came to the United States from Liesci, then a part of Austria. They moved to Romeoville in 1908 and had 14 children. George worked for the Santa Fe Railroad for 49 years. He became involved in politics in Romeoville and held several positions, Four of their sons also worked for the railroad and in village politics. George Pounovich bought the Peterson Tavern in 1931, after Mr. Peterson was murdered while closing there. Pounovich’s brother, Daniel, and his son-in-law, Clarence McClain, ran the tavern.
